When choosing a bed for your bedroom, size matters! Finding the right bed and mattress size for you and the space you have available is essential. Mattress sizes tend to differ between countries, which can make it confusing when researching different bed size options.
DFI Beds has put together an A-Zzz of bed and mattress sizes in Ireland to help make the research process easier and ensure you get the right mattress and bed for you.
Determining the best size of bed for your bedroom is down to two things: available space and personal preference.
Do you have enough space?
The dimensions of a Double bed and mattress in cm are 135cm wide and 190cm long. In feet and inches, this is 4 feet 6 inches wide and 6 feet 3 inches long.
The double mattress and bed is the most common size for a bed in Ireland and one you are likely to be familiar with.
Standard double mattresses offer enough room for two people to sleep comfortably, and works well for those with limited space in the bedroom. In a recent sleep survey conducted by DFI Beds, a majority of respondents (47.35%) stated their current bed was a double.
The dimensions of a Super King size bed and mattress in cm are 180cm wide x 200cmlong.In feet and inches, this is 6ft wide x 6ft 6in long.
As the name would suggest, the Super King mattress is the daddy of all mattresses and the largest bed and mattress size available from DFI Beds. This is sometimes referred to as a 6 foot bed.
If you’re looking for a serious amount of prime sleeping real estate or if you value having a bit of extra personal space in bed, the super king will have you covered. With more than enough room for two people, it will easily accommodate additional small family members and pets for weekend morning snuggles.
The dimensions of a King size bed and mattress in cm are 150cm wide x 200cm long. In In feet and inches, this is 5 feet wide and 6 feet 6 inches long.
Sometimes referred to as a 5 foot bed, a King size mattress offers ample space for two people and is ideal for taller people. As the height of the average Irish person is a mere 5 feet 7.72 inches, the king size should offer more than enough legroom for the average individual. And if you’re over 6 foot 2, this is definitely the bed for you!
The dimensions of a Small Double bed and mattress in cm are 120cm wide and 190cm long. In feet and inches, this is 4 feet wide and 6 feet 3 inches long.
Small doubles are ideal for one individual who likes the space to stretch out in bed.
A small double will fit two adults, but things will get up close and personal. A small double offers comfort without sacrificing space in smaller rooms with the added bonus that our Divan bed sets come with a two or four drawer option, offering additional storage
The dimensions of a Single bed and mattress in cm are 90cm wide and 190cm long. In feet and inches, this is 3 feet wide and 6 feet 3 inches long.
A single mattress and bed are the ideal size for children, providing plenty of room for them to grow into over the years. Also a great option for guest bedrooms and children sharing rooms, or spare rooms with limited space, single mattresses provide a comfortable nights sleep for one child or adult.
A Queen size bed is not a standard bed size in Ireland. However, the bed that in North America is referred to as a Queen Size has dimensions 5 feet wide by 6 feet 8 inches which is the same width as the Irish King Size bed but a little longer (2 inches). This mattress size is not available on the Irish market.

The most common standard mattress sizes in Ireland are Single, Small Double (or Three-Quarter), Double, King Size, and Super King. Our guide above provides the exact dimensions for each in both centimetres and feet/inches.
The Double mattress (135cm x 190cm or 4'6" x 6'3") is generally the most popular and common mattress size sold in Ireland, offering a good balance of space for couples and fitting in average-sized bedrooms.
A Small Double (120cm x 190cm or 4'0" x 6'3") is 15cm (6 inches) narrower than a standard Double mattress (135cm x 190cm). While a Small Double can suit a single adult who wants more space or a compact spare room, a Double offers more comfortable sleeping space for two.
To ensure a perfect fit, always measure the inside dimensions of your bed frame where the mattress will sit. Measure both the length and the width accurately. It's often best to measure in centimetres for precision, then compare these measurements to the mattress dimensions provided in our guide.
For smaller bedrooms, a Single (90cm x 190cm) or Small Double (120cm x 190cm) mattress is usually the most suitable choice. These sizes allow for more floor space, making the room feel less cluttered.
Yes, generally, standard UK and Irish mattress and bed frame sizes are the same. This means that if you purchase a standard UK-sized mattress (e.g., a UK Double), it should fit a standard Irish Double bed frame, and vice versa.
However, it is always crucial to check the exact dimensions in centimetres or feet/inches before purchasing, especially if dealing with older frames, specific manufacturers, or non-standard sizes, as slight variations can sometimes occur.
This becomes even more critical when looking at bedding, as slight differences in mattress depth can affect the fit of fitted sheets.
Not always, especially for Single and **Double** sizes. While some IKEA King and Super King mattresses match standard Irish dimensions, their Single and Double mattresses often follow "European" sizing, which differs slightly from the standard Irish/UK dimensions.
It's crucial to check exact measurements for a proper fit.
The main differences you'll encounter are:
Always verify the specific dimensions of both the mattress and bed frame from the manufacturer's guide.
If your IKEA bed frame is designed for their "European" Single (90x200cm) or Double (140x200cm) size, then a standard Irish Single (90x190cm) or Double (135x190cm) mattress will likely be too short or too narrow.
This can result in gaps or an improper fit, affecting comfort and mattress support. Always measure your bed frame precisely before buying a new mattress.
If you have an IKEA "European" sized mattress (e.g., 90x200cm Single or 140x200cm Double), it will generally be too long and/or too wide for a standard Irish bed frame of the corresponding type (90x190cm Single or 135x190cm Double).
This will lead to the mattress not fitting correctly within the frame.
No, Irish mattress sizes can differ from those in the UK and significantly from those in the US. For example, an Irish King Size (150cm x 200cm) is typically the same as a UK King Size, but a US King Size (often called "Eastern King") is wider at 193cm x 203cm (76" x 80"). Always check dimensions to ensure compatibility.
"Queen Size" is not a standard mattress size in Ireland. This term is primarily used in North America (USA and Canada) for a mattress typically measuring 152cm x 203cm (60" x 80"). In Ireland, the closest standard size would be a King Size (150cm x 200cm).
