Sleep, Sport and Showing Up: How LGFA's Marion Hayden Balances It All

Sleep, Sport and Showing Up: How LGFA's Marion Hayden Balances It All

Great sleep isn't a luxury, it's a non-negotiable. Especially when juggling life, leadership, and Leinster finals. So, we asked our LGFA Sleep Ambassador, Marion Hayden, to share her sleep routine, how she manages recovery, and why quality rest plays a key role in performance, on and off the pitch.

We expected tips and maybe the odd sleepy secret. We got a refreshingly honest look at how sleep can be challenging, even for top performers.

"I'm not a napper."

That was one of the first things Marion told us. She's a Spa Manager at the Seafield Hotel & Spa Resort in Co. Wexford, a mum to a 5-year-old, and a leading LGFA referee who officiated the 2024 TG4 Leinster Senior Final between Dublin and Meath at Croke Park. In short, her days are full. And while naps sound dreamy, they're just not on the agenda.

Despite her busy schedule, Marion aims for 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. But like so many of us, life doesn't always allow it.

"Depending on whether I've had a game that night, the adrenaline could still be rushing around the body," she says. "That can reduce it to 5 or 6 hours. And with a 5-year-old, that can impact sleep and throw a spanner in the works!"

We hear you, Marion.

Sleep & Sport: The Link You Can't Ignore

As a referee and graduate of the LGFA's Learn to Lead Female Leadership programme, Marion knows the difference proper rest can make, especially when it comes to physical performance.

"Sleep plays a huge role in overall performance and progress," she explains. "Poor sleep affects my energy and stamina, increases risk of injury, and even affects my mood."

It's a truth backed by science, but Marion doesn't need a study to tell her what she can feel in her own body. When she's rested, she performs better. Simple as that.

What Keeps Marion Up at Night?

When we asked what most impacts her sleep quality, Marion didn't hesitate:stress, mattress comfort, and kids.

That's part of why Marion's voice is vital to our Sleep Ambassador team. She's not talking about sleep from a perfect ivory tower. She's living it, navigating the same bedtime battles many of us face, while still showing up with focus and professionalism in high-stakes sporting environments.

Swapping Duvets Like a Pro (and Other Summer Sleep Moves)

As summer rolls in, Marion makes a few strategic seasonal swaps to stay comfortable.

"Yes, I use a lighter duvet in the summer and a heavier one in the winter," she says. It's a small change that makes a big difference. And if you're looking to beat the heat this summer, Marion's not the only one making smart sleep upgrades.

At DFI Beds, we recommend a few warm-weather sleep heroes:

  • Graphex   or  Gelflex – Designed with advanced cooling properties, these mattresses help regulate temperature through the night. So whether you're tossing from post-match adrenaline or dealing with a sticky summer evening, you'll stay cooler and more comfortable.
  • Bamboo Mattress Topper – Light, breathable, and naturally moisture-wicking, this topper is ideal for summer. It adds an extra layer of comfort without the weight, helping you drift off even when the room is warm.

Pair those with your favourite light duvet; you've got a summer-ready setup that even a sleep ambassador would approve of.
