The Making of the Maeve Bed

The Making of the Maeve Bed

A behind-the-scenes look at the process of designing DFI’s new Maeve bed

Behind every DFI bed, there’s a story, but this one feels a wee bit special. The Maeve started as a sketch in the corner of a notebook, an idea by Louise, our Head of Marketing. It’s a labour of love, and the first bed we’ve created at DFI Beds using a designer fabric.

The Maeve Bed features a statement tall floor-standing headboard with dramatic curves, extra padding, and a piped fabric trim, and stunning botanical green fabric. It’s a big, bold design, that stands out from the crowd.

So, we’ve named it after the legendary Queen of Connacht, known for her strength, cunning, and ambition. We’ve paired the dramatic floor-standing headboard with our dark green divan bed base and luxury walnut wooden feet.

“If you’re looking for a dramatic bed in a beautiful designer fabric, with a nod to heritage design and traditional craftmanship, this could be the bed you’ve been waiting for. You won't find it anywhere else!” – Louise Spokes

The design process

When we were creating this bed, Louise had a design in mind for the statement headboard and worked with our production team to make it happen. She knew it had to be TALL, curved, and really impressive, something that would really transform a bedroom. While classic beds in beige and grey will always be popular, they’re not for everyone. We know, many of you are looking for something a bit different. That’s where the Maeve comes in.

Louise spent months scouring magazines and websites for inspiration and collecting fabric swatches to find the perfect shape and a designer fabric to go with the new design, until she eventually found THE ONE.

This bed features the stunning Electric Poppies, Heritage Green recycled velvet fabric by Studio Coverdale. It’s sumptuous, luxurious, and a bit quirky... and honestly, the fabric alone is worth more than some of our value range beds! We’ve paired the dramatic headboard with a divan base made with our own green fabric.

About the Fabric

This bed features Studio Coverdale Electric Poppies Heritage Green Recycled Velvet. This glorious blooming botanical print is all about bringing 'fun and frivolity' into your home! Beautiful, rich green and pink colours and luxurious feel, most sumptuous. Pile made from recycled plastic bottles and post-consumer waste. It’s beautiful, sustainable, and so, so, indulgent.

Composition:67% Recycled PES / 33% PES

Weight: 540gsm

Pattern Repeat: 66x66cm

Rub Count: 40000

To ensure the beauty and longevity of the velvet, we recommend gently brushing with a fabric brush and spot-cleaning any marks with a damp cloth. This care routine will help maintain the fabric's plush feel and vibrant colour.

Due to the way this fabric is printed, this bed with Electric Poppies Heritage Green Fabric is only available in Single (3ft), Small Double (4ft) and Double (4ft 6).

Manufactured in Ireland

Behind the scenes at the DFI Beds factory in Co. Tyrone.

Handmade here in Ireland by expert craftspeople, Maeve’s tall, sculpted silhouette features a gentle rise in the centre, curving gracefully into soft dips before sweeping out toward the edges. The elegant curves might look effortless but achieving that precision takes real skill.

The timber frame is cut by an expert CNC operator using computer-controlled machinery that follows the exact design pattern down to the millimetre. It’s a highly skilled job, and only the first step in the production process. Then the frame is covered with multiple layers of padding, the outer layer of fabric, and finished with piping around the edges.

Why choose a statement headboard?

Statement headboards like this are having a real moment in interior design. Designers and stylists alike are embracing them as the new focal point of the bedroom.

It’s a way to bring height, drama, and personality to the space without changing the entire layout. As Homes & Gardens notes, headboards “combine practicality with aesthetics,” while Architectural Digest calls them “the perfect way to make a dramatic first impression.”

If your divan base is still going strong but your space needs a refresh, a statement headboard is an effortless way to upgrade. Simply attach it to your existing base and transform the whole mood of the room in one move.
