6 Foods That Help You Sleep Better

If you are finding it hard to sleep at night, it may come down to many reasons, one being the food you are eating before bed. There are many foods that have an effect on your sleep see our ‘effects alcohol and food have on sleep’ post.

But what about foods that could help with sleep? Making a slight change to your diet can help with a good night’s sleep.

Melatonin is a hormone that controls sleep cycles, you will find the foods below all have this in common. 


Almonds

Many nuts are considered to be good for sleep, nuts contain Melatonin as well magnesium and zinc which are all essentials for a good night’s sleep but there is a limit, it is only recommended to have no more than an ounce before bed time.

Honey

Honey has lots of benefits to help with a good night’s sleep. Not only does it produce melatonin, but it also helps your brain work while you are asleep. You can have it in a cup of tea or straight off a spoon whichever you choose.

Turkey

There is evidence that shows eating certain amounts of protein before bed is associated with better sleep and that is exactly what Turkey is full off. The high amounts of protein and tryptophan is what induces tiredness and helps with sleeping.

Oatmeal

Change it up with some breakfast for supper instead. Oatmeal is high in carbs and helps induce drowsiness which is perfect before bed not only that, oats itself is a known source of melatonin so you are guaranteed to improve sleepiness. 

Chamomile Tea

This herbal tea is very popular to help before going to sleep at night. Chamomile tea produces an antioxidant that promotes sleepiness and reduces insomnia, it also helps with reducing anxiety and depression which also plays a big factor with not being able to get to sleep. 

Bananas

Bananas are full of magnesium which helps calm stress and promote sleep, it is rich in different vitamins which all help with falling asleep at night. 

Eating these foods have lots of other health benefits, full of vitamins and a lot healthier for you and your body too. 

Now I am off to have my oats, banana, honey and almonds and tea before bed, I will maybe leave the turkey to tomorrow night!
